workshop information

The Rospotrebnadzor and the Office of AIDS Research of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) will convene a United States–Russia Workshop on HIV Prevention Science within the framework of the third Eastern Europe and Central Asia AIDS Conference (EECAAC 2009). Long-standing U.S.-Russian collaboration in public health and recent discussions between the Governments of the Russian Federation and of the United States–including the summit in Bratislava and the G8 St. Petersburg Summit–have raised the priority of strengthened international collaboration in HIV/AIDS biomedical and behavioral research. The objective of this workshop is to review recent scientific developments and advances in the Russian Federation, the United States, and the region of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, in the areas of basic, preclinical, and clinical HIV/AIDS research, with the ultimate goal of developing HIV vaccines, microbicides, and other prevention interventions. The workshop will provide a forum for dialogue among scientists, clinicians, and representatives of multilateral and community organizations. Special sessions focused on junior-level scientists are planned. The workshop participants will identify scientific opportunities, develop recommendations, and generate a scientific agenda for future collaborative HIV/AIDS prevention research in the region. Workshop space is limited, and priority entrance will be given to invited participants. If space remains after all invited participants have been seated, others will be permitted to attend.
