The Universityof Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus (UPR), the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC/PAHO/WHO), in collaboration with the Office of AIDS Research, National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, are pleased to sponsor the conference entitled A Multicultural Caribbean United Against HIV/AIDS. The conference is scheduled for March 5–7, 2004, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

This conference will target HIV/AIDS researchers, health care and service providers, and persons living with or affected by HIV in Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, the Bahamas, Belize, Dominican Republic, French Guiana, Guadeloupe (including St. Barthelemy and St. Martin), Haiti, Martinique, the Netherlands Antilles (including Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, St. Eustatius, and St. Maarten), Puerto Rico, Suriname, Turks and Caicos, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The English-speaking countries targeted were selected because of their significant Spanish-speaking populations.

The theme of the conference, A Multicultural Caribbean United Against HIV/AIDS, is not just a theme but must represent a reality as well if the Caribbean, as a single geographic entity, is to make any real progress in stemming the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the region. This conference is about the Caribbean, by the Caribbean, for the Caribbean, and hosted in the Caribbean.

The conference will be conducted in Spanish, French, Dutch, and English. Conference presentations will address topics such as HIV prevention; vaccine research; treatment, care, and support; stigma and discrimination; mother-to-child transmission; and issues related to vulnerable populations.

Conference Goals

The primary goals of the conference are:

  • To enhance the Caribbean’s regional efforts to work collectively toward preventing the spread of HIV and mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDS on the health, social, and economic status of the region

  • To improve regional responses to HIV/AIDS through the application of knowledge, research, learning, collaboration, and best practices within the Caribbean region

  • To develop regional research capacity through promotion of a Caribbean HIV/AIDS research agenda and dissemination of the latest HIV/AIDS research information

The original English text of conference materials has been translated into Spanish, French, and Dutch by professional translators. Because our audience for this information is from a variety of countries with different dialects and preferences for language style, we have attempted to use as “universal” a style as possible. We understand that some exception may be taken to the use of words or phrases, and we appreciate your understanding that our purpose is to provide information in multiple languages for your convenience. As is required of translators who work at international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Health Organization, the translators who were engaged for this assignment hold either a university degree and/or a diploma from an internationally recognized school in interpreting/translating, and are certified or have demonstrated extensive successful professional experience in translation.
