of AIDS Research, National
Institutes of Health, U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services, are pleased to sponsor the
conference entitled A Multicultural Caribbean United Against HIV/AIDS.
The conference is scheduled for
March 57, 2004, in
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
This conference will target
HIV/AIDS researchers, health care and service providers, and persons
living with or affected by HIV in Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, the Bahamas,
Belize, Dominican Republic, French Guiana, Guadeloupe (including St.
Barthelemy and St. Martin), Haiti, Martinique, the Netherlands Antilles
(including Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, St. Eustatius, and St. Maarten),
Puerto Rico, Suriname, Turks and Caicos, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The English-speaking countries targeted were selected because of their
significant Spanish-speaking populations.
The theme of the
conference, A Multicultural Caribbean United Against HIV/AIDS, is
not just a theme but must represent a reality as well if the
Caribbean, as a single geographic entity, is to make any
real progress in stemming the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the region. This
conference is about the
Caribbean, by the
Caribbean, for the
Caribbean, and hosted in the
Caribbean.
The conference will be
conducted in Spanish, French, Dutch, and English. Conference presentations
will address topics such as HIV prevention; vaccine research; treatment,
care, and support; stigma and discrimination; mother-to-child
transmission; and issues related to vulnerable populations.
