CONFERENCE PROGRAM -- TRACK D

Description | Learning Objectives | Sessions

TRACK D CRITICAL ISSUES IN DRUG RESISTANCE AND VACCINE RESEARCH

The challenge of and need for drug surveillance (including HIV testing infrastructure and the difficulty in selecting second- and third-line antiretrovirals) as well as the importance of adherence in preventing drug resistance have emerged as critical issues for the Caribbean region. This track presents the emerging issues in the Caribbean of drug resistance, virologic epidemiology, and different viral genotypes/subtypes.

Additionally, in the absence of a definitive curative therapy, the search for an HIV vaccine is essential. The Caribbean, the region with the second highest incidence of HIV/AIDS in the world, has been selected to participate in international vaccine trial programs with five trial sites. The Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad and Tobago receive funding from a number of international organizations to conduct clinical trials. Finding a vaccine and ultimately a cure for HIV/AIDS has become a central preoccupation for people living with HIV/AIDS, governments, researchers, and health care providers—not only in the region, but throughout the world.

This track also addresses research findings on vaccine trials, updates on the latest vaccine research, and various perspectives on the latest research. State-of-the-art interventions and capacity building to support the conduct of clinical trials in the Caribbean and ethical issues associated with vaccine research will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the track’s sessions, participants should be able to:

  • Define drug resistance

  • Understand the implications of drug resistance on the effective treatment and spread of HIV

  • Know what a vaccine trial is and the different types of vaccine trials

  • Know the status of vaccine trials both internationally and regionally

  • Understand the contribution of vaccine trials toward a cure for AIDS

  • Identify and discuss the ethical issues involved in setting up a vaccine trial

Sessions:
  • State-of-the-Art Research on HIV/AIDS Vaccine
  • Virologic Epidemiology and Drug Resistance Surveillance
  • Critical and Ethical Issues in Vaccine Trials
  • POSTER SESSION
